Coast Guard Station

Pacific Helicopters has provided various helicopter
support services for the maintenance of the Omega station during
the past decade.
We are currently involved in the dismantling of the station.
To include:
- Hanging crews and equipment from suspension wires
- Bringing down lines in sections
- Bringing down equipment from ridge line
The scope of the project was to remove a network of 6 - 30,000
LBS, 7500' long spans of 2" cable to include 5 - 4000 LBS,
700' jumper cables that connected the six cables and 2 20,000 LBS
1200 ft vertical cables that transferred power from the generating
building to antenna spans.
The ends of the 7500 foot spans were on 2 ridge lines at 2500 ft
above sea level. The belly of the spans were 1200 ft above the ground.
Each of the six antenna spans were installed with 60,000 pounds
of tension.
Work involved transporting men from the ground by helicopter and
landing them on the wires in baskets. We removed the 4000 LB jumpers
by taking the weight from the men in baskets and flying the 200
ft lengths of cable to the ground.
Upon removing all jumpers we were required to fly 3000' of 5/8"
Cable to anchor points from a 90 Ton Winch to reduce tension and
lower 7500' spans. Upon lowering spans we cut the cable into 1000'
pieces, removed 5000 lb insulator groups and flew out the individual
segments.
After completion of lowering the six spans we flew crews to the
twelve anchor points on the ridge tops, cut and flew the 4000 lb
steel anchor points to a marshalling yard at the bottom of the valley.
The job was to begin on September 30,1997 and was scheduled to
be completed on December 30,1997. We completed the job in 30 days
on October 30,1997, 60 days ahead of schedule by using techniques
developed throughout our years of experience. There were no accidents
or incidents in 160 flight hours on the job.
