TRI-O
(Click on image to pop up larger version)
Helicopter Support in installation of the 138kv power line from
Maalaea power plant to the Lahaina Station from May 1996 to November
1996.
Subcontracted by Tri-O, Inc. of Salt Lake City, Utah. Tri-O was
the prime contractor of Maui Electric for whom the line was built.
On-site operations personnel were:
Tom Hauptman and Eric Pacheco, Logistics Management and Heavy Lift,
Long Line Pilots.
Scope
To include Transportation of crews and equipment to pole sites.
External loads to include:
- Concrete - approximately 15 poles with 50 to 60 yards of concrete
at each hole
- Gravel - approximately 40 poles with 20 to 30 yards of gravel
per hole
- Pole Sets - approximately 50 poles with 2 to 5 sections per
pole (Poles total an average weight of 17,000 Ibs. to 20,000 lbs)
- Setting of travelers (rollers that will pull the lines from
one pole to another)
- Pulling of power lines (approximately 14 miles) three conductors
and one neutral shield wire
- Installation of Visibility Wire Balls
Our main task was to transport work crews to and from the almost
60 inaccessible sites for construction of a 14 mile long power line
from central Maui to Lahaina. After preparation for the structures
each site required more than 30 trips with Heavy Lift Helicopters
to set the foundation molds, erect steel poles and pour concrete
to erect the structures. Some sites required as many as 100 trips.
Over 500 hours of flight time was required to complete this project.
Upon completion of the tower assemblies, we placed travelers on
each insulator and pulled all the wire in place to complete the
project on time by December 7,1996.
